Most billing questions from members are really date questions: why was I charged today, why was it a strange amount, when is the next one. The answer comes from two settings on the pricing plan, **Billing anchor day** and **Charge pro-rata for partial first period**, and from the day the member joined.

Both are set per pricing plan, under **Billing day**, when you create or edit a membership. See [Create a membership plan](/articles/create-a-membership-plan).

A fixed day only works when the next occurrence of that day falls within one billing period of the join date, so it suits monthly and longer cadences rather than weekly ones.

**Signup anniversary.** The member pays the first full period plus any signup fee when they join. The next charge is one period later.

**Fixed day, with pro-rata set to Yes.** The member pays a part-period amount when they join, plus any signup fee. That part-period covers the days between joining and the billing day. From the billing day they pay the full price every period.

**Fixed day, with pro-rata set to No.** The member pays nothing for the gap. Any signup fee is still taken when they join. Their first full charge lands on the billing day.

**With a trial.** The member joins straight away and is charged when the trial ends. A fixed billing day overrides the trial: if the plan has a billing day, the trial is ignored.

Why the first amount is not a round number

A part-period charge is worked out by Stripe at the moment the member joins, from the plan price and the days between joining and the billing day. Dyno does not calculate it, and deliberately never shows a member an estimate of it: the app shows **Calculated at checkout** instead of a figure.

The exact amount only exists once the member has joined. You can see it afterwards on their **Payments** tab, and on the payment itself in **Finances**.

On the confirm screen in the app, under **Billing Summary**:

Nothing due today still means handing over a card or setting up a Direct Debit. The payment method is saved so the first real charge can be taken on the billing day.

**Next Payment** shows **Not billed** when nothing bills that membership, for example a comp membership. That is not a missing date, it is the absence of billing.

A member's billing dates on their own page

A renewal invoice carries the recurring price and nothing else. The signup fee is a first-invoice item and is never charged again.

Watch for these on the renewal after a join:

A Direct Debit is raised on the billing date and collected by the bank several days later, so the two dates differ. The **Payments** tab shows the raised date and, once it lands, the settled date. See [Direct Debit for memberships](/articles/direct-debit-setup).

When a member is actually charged, what their first payment covers, and what you can and cannot change afterwards.

Signup anniversary: each member is billed from the day they joined. Someone who joins on the 14th is billed on the 14th of each period. Members on the same plan are all on different days. A fixed day of the month: everyone on the plan is billed on that day. If the day does not exist in a given month, for example the 31st in February, the charge falls on the last day of that month. What the member sees when they join On the confirm screen in the app, under Billing Summary: The recurring price, labelled with the cadence, for example Monthly payment. Due today with the amount, when Dyno knows it. Calculated at checkout in place of the amount, when the join carries a part-period charge only Stripe can price. When nothing is due today, a line saying so, for example "No charge today. We will save your card and take your first payment of £40.00 on 1 October 2026." Nothing due today still means handing over a card or setting up a Direct Debit. The payment method is saved so the first real charge can be taken on the billing day. Where to see a member's dates Open Members and click the member. On the membership card, read Billing Cycle, Assigned Date and Next Payment. Open the Payments tab for every payment taken, newest first. Next Payment shows Not billed when nothing bills that membership, for example a comp membership. That is not a missing date, it is the absence of billing. A member's billing dates on their own page A member page showing Membership Details with the plan, price, billing cycle, assigned date and next payment What you can change The plan's billing day and pro-rata setting. Open the membership, click Edit and change Billing anchor day or Charge pro-rata for partial first period. This only affects members who join after the change. Everyone already on the plan keeps the day they were set up on. One member's first pro-rata charge, before they join. Tick Waive pro-rata charge on a detailed invite. See Discounts on invites. Pause a member's billing. Billing stops and restarts on their normal billing day. See Pause a membership. What you cannot change One member's billing day. There is no setting for it in the dashboard, and editing the plan will not move an existing member. If a member genuinely needs a different day, contact Dyno support. The price an existing member pays, by editing the plan. New joiners pay the new price and existing members keep the one they joined at. To move a member onto a different price, see Change a member's plan. A payment that has already been raised. Refund it instead. See Issue a refund. What changes on renewal A renewal invoice carries the recurring price and nothing else. The signup fee is a first-invoice item and is never charged again. Watch for these on the renewal after a join: A discount set to apply once, or for a set number of months, runs out and the price goes back up. See Discounts explained. Max Billing Cycles ends the plan once it has billed that many times, and the member stops being charged. A cancellation with a notice period still charges a renewal that falls inside the notice. See Cancel a membership. Direct Debit dates A Direct Debit is raised on the billing date and collected by the bank several days later, so the two dates differ. Billing dates and pro-rata

Direct Debit is for recurring memberships only. One-off purchases such as events, day passes and packs always take a card, whatever you set here, because Direct Debit takes too long to clear for a small one-off amount.

Direct Debit runs on your own Stripe account, like every other payment. Your club is the seller and the money lands in your Stripe balance. See [Connect Stripe](/articles/connect-stripe).

It lists **Card payments** and **Bacs Direct Debit** with a status each:

Card payments are ready by default once your Stripe account is connected. Direct Debit needs UK Bacs verification, and Stripe usually asks for a few extra details after onboarding. Complete those in your Stripe dashboard and the status here updates on its own.

Do not switch members onto Direct Debit until this says **Active**. If it is not enabled, a member choosing Direct Debit gets an error instead of a membership.

Direct Debit only works with UK bank accounts, so **Direct Debit only (UK)** will lock out anyone banking elsewhere.

Direct Debit is mandate first. The mandate has to exist before the membership can be created against it, so the app collects it as a separate step.

If the member backs out of the mandate sheet, nothing is set up and nothing is charged. If Stripe cannot create the mandate at all, they are told Direct Debit is unavailable and asked to use a card, where your club allows one.

A member cannot add a Direct Debit later from their payment settings in the app: that screen adds cards only. A mandate is set up when they buy a membership.

A Direct Debit join that shows the membership purchase on one day and the money days later is one join, not two payments. The gap is the bank, not a double charge.

As soon as the first collection is submitted, before the money arrives. The mandate has been accepted at that point and the payment is on its way, which is the usual convention for a UK club.

If that first collection then fails, the membership is removed straight away. There is no grace period for a first payment that never cleared. Once a member has one settled payment behind them, a later failure follows the normal route: Stripe retries, the member is chased, and they keep access while that is happening. See [Failed payments](/articles/failed-payments).

If the member cancels the mandate at their bank, or the bank refuses it, the membership ends. Dyno notifies the member so they can set their details up again, which means buying the membership again.

A Direct Debit is raised on the billing date and takes several working days to reach your Stripe balance. Until it does, it counts towards **Still settling** rather than **Awaiting next payout** on the **Finances** page. See [Payouts to your bank](/articles/payouts-and-balance).

A member who is still paying your previous provider can be held on a comp membership while their Direct Debit transfers to Stripe. Their page says **Awaiting Direct Debit transfer**: they have full access, Dyno collects nothing, and their **Payments** tab stays empty on purpose.

There is nothing to do while that is true. They are moved onto billing for you once the transfer lands, and only then is the old Direct Debit cancelled. Starting billing by hand before that charges them twice, and the dashboard makes you tick a box to confirm you understand. See [Change a member's plan](/articles/change-a-members-plan).

Turn on UK Direct Debit, how a member sets up a mandate, what you see while it clears, and how it differs from card.

Direct Debit is for recurring memberships only. Pending verification: Stripe is still checking. If it needs anything from you, the card lists the details it is waiting for. Not enabled: Direct Debit is not available on your account yet. Under Payment method they tap Direct Debit. The screen tells them their first payment will come out approximately 4 working days from now, and that Direct Debit only works with UK bank accounts. They tap through to pay. Stripe's sheet opens on the Direct Debit form, showing your club as the party being authorised, along with the Direct Debit Guarantee. Once they authorise it, Dyno creates the membership against that mandate and requests the first payment. They see a Direct Debit set up panel confirming the mandate and that the first payment has been requested. If the member backs out of the mandate sheet, nothing is set up and nothing is charged. If Stripe cannot create the mandate at all, they are told Direct Debit is unavailable and asked to use a card, where your club allows one. The Activity tab says the same thing in words: the purchase first reads that the first payment is awaiting Direct Debit settlement, and later that the amount was collected by Direct Debit on the day it landed. A Direct Debit is requested on the day and arrives days later, both for the member's first payment and for every renewal. Access. Card access is immediate and proven. Direct Debit access is given on trust while the first payment clears, and withdrawn if it does not. Failures. Cards expire, get cancelled and get replaced, and Dyno warns members before a card on file expires. A mandate does not expire, so there is no warning to send, but a member can cancel it at their bank without telling you. Coverage. Direct Debit is UK bank accounts only. Cards work anywhere. Setup. A card is one step at checkout. Direct Debit is two: the mandate, then the membership. One-off sales. Always card, for both. Members moving from another provider A member who is still paying your previous provider can be held on a comp membership while their Direct Debit transfers to Stripe. Direct Debit for memberships

When a membership payment fails, Stripe retries it automatically. Dyno tells the member, emails the club's owners, and sends reminders until the payment goes through or the membership ends.

While Stripe is still retrying, the member keeps their membership.

If Stripe finally cancels the subscription or marks it unpaid, Dyno ends the membership. The member gets an app notification. Club owners get an email if **Cancellations** is switched on.

If you use Dyno Entry, you can stop members with a failed payment from getting in. Open **Settings**, choose **Dyno Entry** and turn on **Failed payment stops entry**. Members are let in again as soon as their payment goes through.

Dyno records the failure but sends no notification, email or reminder when:

Ask the member to add a working card in the Dyno app. They open their profile, go to **Settings** and tap **Payments**.

For a returned Direct Debit, ask the member to check with their bank that the mandate is still active.

These emails go to everyone who owns the club. Dyno still chases the payment either way.

Failed-payment reminders are included on every paid plan. They do not need the Retention add-on. Retention adds win-back emails for members at risk of leaving, reminders before passes expire, and renewal reminders. It does not change what happens when a payment fails.

To see how much failed-payment revenue came back, check the **Revenue Recovered** figure on the **Analytics** page.

What happens when a membership payment fails, who is told, and how to get it paid.

When a membership payment fails, Stripe retries it automatically. Dyno tells the member, emails the club's owners, and sends reminders until the payment goes through or the membership ends. What happens when a payment fails Stripe retries the payment. Stripe decides when to retry, not your club. The member gets an app notification. For a card, it asks them to check their payment details. For a Direct Debit, it tells them their bank returned the payment. Club owners get an email if Failed Payments is switched on (see below). You get one email for each failed payment, not one for every retry. Reminders go out on day 1, 3 and 7 after the failure. Each one is an email and an app notification asking the member to update their card, with a button that opens the payment screen in the app. For a child's membership, reminders go to the guardian. Reminders are included on every paid Dyno plan, but not on the Free plan. Reminders stop once the payment goes through. While Stripe is still retrying, the member keeps their membership. If the payment is never recovered If Stripe finally cancels the subscription or marks it unpaid, Dyno ends the membership. The member gets an app notification. Club owners get an email if Cancellations is switched on. If you use Dyno Entry, you can stop members with a failed payment from getting in. Open Settings, choose Dyno Entry and turn on Failed payment stops entry. Members are let in again as soon as their payment goes through. When nobody is told Dyno records the failure but sends no notification, email or reminder when: a member joining by card has their first attempt declined while they are still at checkout the payment has already been paid by the time Dyno handles the failure your club's Stripe account is disconnected See why a payment failed Open Members and click the member. Open the Activity tab. A failed payment shows who was paying, the amount, the membership and the reason Stripe gave, such as insufficient funds or card expired. For a child, the guardian is named as the payer. Open the Payments tab. Payment method shows whether the card or Direct Debit on file can be charged. The Payment method status is one of: Active: it can be charged. Action needed: the card has expired, has been removed, or there is no payment method. The next payment will fail until the member adds one. Not checked: Stripe did not answer. Refresh the page. Get the payment made Ask the member to add a working card in the Dyno app. They open their profile, go to Settings and tap Payments. For a returned Direct Debit, ask the member to check with their bank that the mandate is still active. Warnings before a payment fails Card expiry: Dyno sends members an app notification when the card they pay with expires within 30 days, or has already expired. Direct Debits do not expire, so they get no warning. No working payment method: if a membership someone pays for cannot be charged, the Dyno app shows Payment method needed after they sign in, with Add a card and Not now. Turn owner emails on or off Open Settings and choose Notifications. Under Emails To You, switch Failed Payments on or off. These emails go to everyone who owns the club. Dyno still chases the payment either way. The Retention add-on Failed-payment reminders are included on every paid plan. They do not need the Retention add-on. Retention adds win-back emails for members at risk of leaving, reminders before passes expire, and renewal reminders. It does not change what happens when a payment fails. Failed payments

You can refund a payment from the Dyno dashboard without logging in to Stripe. Your club took the payment on its own Stripe account, so the refund comes out of your club's Stripe balance.

Only club owners, admins and managers can issue refunds.

The search box searches payment descriptions, not member names. To find a member's payment, open **Members**, click the member, open the **Payments** tab and click the payment.

A refund cannot be undone. You can refund part of a payment and refund more of it later, up to the original amount.

A refund does not cancel a membership. The member keeps their membership and is billed again on their next billing date.

To stop billing, use the **Subscription** panel on the same payment page:

Refunding a pass purchase removes the pass from the member, even if you only refund part of it.

Refund all or part of a member's payment from the dashboard, back to the way they paid.

Only club owners, admins and managers can issue refunds. Find the payment Open Finances in the sidebar. Scroll to Recent Transactions. Choose All or Completed. Pending payments cannot be opened. Click the payment to open it. The search box searches payment descriptions, not member names. To find a member's payment, open Members, click the member, open the Payments tab and click the payment. Refund it In the Refunds panel, type the amount to refund. The box shows the most you can refund. To refund in full, enter the whole amount. Leave Reason (optional) empty. Click Issue Refund. Check the amount and click Confirm refund. A refund cannot be undone. You can refund part of a payment and refund more of it later, up to the original amount. What happens next You see Refund issued. and the refund appears in the Refunds table with its status. The money is taken from your club's Stripe balance and sent back to the card or account the member paid with. How long it takes to reach them depends on Stripe and their bank. If Dyno took a processing fee on the payment, the matching share of that fee is returned. The payment shows it as Fee refunded, and the Net figure updates. Dyno does not email or notify the member about the refund, so let them know yourself. What a refund does not do A refund does not cancel a membership. The member keeps their membership and is billed again on their next billing date. To stop billing, use the Subscription panel on the same payment page: Cancel at period end: the membership runs until the end of the period they have paid for, then stops. Cancel immediately: the membership ends now and the member loses access straight away. No money is refunded unless you issue a refund as well. See Cancel a membership for other ways to cancel. Issue a refund

Members pay your club through your own Stripe account. That money does not go straight to your bank. It lands in your Stripe balance first, then Stripe pays it out to your bank. Stripe decides when payouts happen, not Dyno. The **Finances** page shows both steps.

A balance of zero usually means everything has already been sent to your bank. When that happens, the card tells you the amount and date of your last payout.

If you see **No bank payouts yet**, your Stripe account is not connected or payouts are not switched on yet. See [Connect Stripe](/articles/connect-stripe).

Under the balance, every payout is listed with:

If a payout fails, the money goes back to your Stripe balance and is included in a later payout. Click **Show older payouts** to see further back.

The amounts here are what reached your Stripe balance, after fees. They can differ from the price the member paid. If a payout holds a very large number of payments, only the first ones are listed. The full breakdown is in your Stripe dashboard.

Click **Open Stripe dashboard** on the **Bank payouts** card. Use it for anything Dyno does not show, such as your full payout breakdown or your Stripe account details. The button only appears when your Stripe account supports it.

Dyno does not charge a platform fee. The only fee Dyno takes from a payment is a processing rate. It is taken out of the payment, never added to the price the member pays.

If the **Bank payouts** card says **We couldn't reach Stripe just now**, your money is not affected. Click **Retry**.

See your Stripe balance, every payout to your bank and the payments inside each one.

Check your payout history Under the balance, every payout is listed with: Sent: the date Stripe sent it. Arrives: the date it is due in your bank. Amount: how much was paid out. Status: Paid, In transit, On its way, Failed or Cancelled. If a payout fails, the money goes back to your Stripe balance and is included in a later payout. Click Show older payouts to see further back. See what is inside a payout Click a payout in the list. The top panel shows when it was sent, when it arrived or is expected, and the Payout amount, split into Payments, Fees and Net. Under What's inside this payout, each payment is listed with its Date, Description, Member, Amount, Fee and Net. Click a payment to open it. The amounts here are what reached your Stripe balance, after fees. They can differ from the price the member paid. If a payout holds a very large number of payments, only the first ones are listed. The full breakdown is in your Stripe dashboard. Open your Stripe dashboard Click Open Stripe dashboard on the Bank payouts card. Use it for anything Dyno does not show, such as your full payout breakdown or your Stripe account details. The button only appears when your Stripe account supports it. Fees Dyno does not charge a platform fee. The only fee Dyno takes from a payment is a processing rate. It is taken out of the payment, never added to the price the member pays. To see your rates, open Settings, choose Payments and look for Your processing rates. Rates are shown per method: Card & wallet, Direct Debit and In person. The card only appears when your club has a rate above zero. To see the fee on a single payment, open it from Recent Transactions on the Finances page. It shows the Processing fee and the Net amount. When you refund a payment, the matching share of the processing fee is returned. See Issue a refund. If the Bank payouts card says We couldn't reach Stripe just now, your money is not affected. Click Retry.

Payouts to your bank

Your club takes payment on its own Stripe account. Your club is the seller, and the money goes to your Stripe balance. Dyno charges no platform fee. Recurring memberships renew automatically: Stripe charges the member's saved card or Direct Debit on each billing date.

You set this on each price when you create or edit a membership.

The **Billing anchor day** setting decides when members are billed.

**Signup anniversary** (the default) bills each member from the day they join. They pay when they join, then again each period from that date.

**A fixed day of the month** bills everyone on that day, for example the 1st. If a month is shorter than the day you choose, members are billed on the last day of that month. A fixed day only works if it falls within one billing period of the join date.

With a fixed day, **Charge pro-rata for partial first period** decides what happens between joining and that day:

An invite can waive that part-period charge for one member, for example if they have already paid for this period somewhere else. See [Invite discounts](/articles/invite-discounts).

**Trial Period (days)** gives free days before the first charge. A fixed billing day overrides the trial.

**Signup Fee** is a one-time charge added to the member's first payment. Leave it blank for none.

A discount on the membership also comes off the signup fee. Promo codes can waive the joining fee or set a different one. See [Promo codes](/articles/promo-codes).

Some joins cost nothing on the day, for example a fixed billing day with no pro-rata charge, or a first period that is fully discounted. The member is not charged when they join. The first real charge is taken on the billing day from the payment method saved for that membership.

If a membership has no working payment method, the member sees **Payment method needed** in the Dyno app, with a button to add a card. On the member's page in your dashboard, the **Payments** tab shows **Action needed**.

A membership priced at zero with no signup fee is never charged.

This only affects memberships. One-off purchases such as events and day passes are paid by card.

A member paying by Direct Debit sets up the mandate first, and their membership is created against it. They get access as soon as the first Direct Debit has been submitted, before the money has settled. If that first collection fails, access is removed. On the member's **Payments** tab, a Direct Debit shows the date it was raised and the date it settled.

Dyno takes a processing rate from each payment. It comes out of the payment and is never added to the member's price. To see your rates, open **Settings**, choose **Payments** and look for **Your processing rates**. The card only appears when your club has a rate above zero. See [Payouts to your bank](/articles/payouts-and-balance).

A child's membership is paid by their guardian. On the child's **Payments** tab, each payment shows who paid for it.

Dyno emails members a receipt after each successful membership payment. To turn this off, open **Settings**, choose **Notifications** and switch off **Payment Receipts** under **Automated Email Notifications**.

When members are charged, what the first payment covers, signup fees, discounts, and card or Direct Debit.

Your club takes payment on its own Stripe account. Your club is the seller, and the money goes to your Stripe balance. Dyno charges no platform fee. Recurring memberships renew automatically: Stripe charges the member's saved card or Direct Debit on each billing date. How often members pay You set this on each price when you create or edit a membership. Billing Type: Recurring or One-time. Period: Day, Week, Month or Year. Bill every (count): how many periods between charges. For every 4 weeks, choose Week and enter 4. For quarterly, choose Month and enter 3. See Create a membership plan for the rest of the form. The first payment The Billing anchor day setting decides when members are billed. Signup anniversary (the default) bills each member from the day they join. They pay when they join, then again each period from that date. A fixed day of the month bills everyone on that day, for example the 1st. If a month is shorter than the day you choose, members are billed on the last day of that month. A fixed day only works if it falls within one billing period of the join date. With a fixed day, Charge pro-rata for partial first period decides what happens between joining and that day: No (first full charge on anchor day): the member joins and pays nothing for the gap. Their first full charge is on the billing day. Yes (pro-rata charge today, then full from anchor): the member pays a part-period amount when they join, then the full price from the billing day onwards. An invite can waive that part-period charge for one member, for example if they have already paid for this period somewhere else. See Invite discounts. Trial Period (days) gives free days before the first charge. A fixed billing day overrides the trial. Signup fees Signup Fee is a one-time charge added to the member's first payment. Leave it blank for none. A discount on the membership also comes off the signup fee. Promo codes can waive the joining fee or set a different one. See Promo codes. When nothing is due today Some joins cost nothing on the day, for example a fixed billing day with no pro-rata charge, or a first period that is fully discounted. The member is not charged when they join. The first real charge is taken on the billing day from the payment method saved for that membership. If a membership has no working payment method, the member sees Payment method needed in the Dyno app, with a button to add a card.
